Colonizing Mars at this point in human history, if successful, will inevitably end with Earth nuking the entire colonization. A terrible waste of lives, effort, time and money. The best option for going to mars is going there only to explore, not to build a colony of 1mil+, as the current plan seeks to do. Let’s evaluate.

Martian Health

Going to Mars will require things like food, water, and oxygen. We can bring some there, but most will need to be sourced from mars. Sure. What it also requires is a magnetosphere. The immense amount of radiation can be mitigated by staying inside, but is that practical? How will we keep 1 million humans sheltered against their will? It destroys the human spirit and is entirely impractical to expect these future people to stay inside. You may be thinking spacesuits can do a lot, and they can, but they cannot prevent exposure to radiation entirely, like a magnetosphere can. Therefore it’s unethical to have kids because it will only be a few short generations before they become mutants. So should we aim to have any. sort of society like we have on Mars, we need a magnetosphere. It’s not impossible. Superconducting magnets and fusion temperature plasma circuits can create the magnetic fields required. But it will take testing, money, and increase the payloads we need to take to Mars.

False Hope of Saving Humanity

Billionaires like to pass the idea that they are saving humanity in the event of an Earthly cataclysm. If we are to fear the elimination or destruction of humanity on a global scale, the first and most obvious solution is to get ourselves to another planet. Why not Mars? Sure. Let’s suppose a self sufficient colony was built that replicated civilization on Earth. It will take generations of developing things like a magnetosphere, and analogs to terrestrial gov, healthcare, and defense, but it is do-able. However, in the time that it takes to develop all this, humans will be having childern, and those children will be having children under circumstances completely removed from what humans have evolved under. Therefore these people will have changed DNA, even if just epigenitic markers, that make them a new species call something like Martians. They will not be humans and you cannot use them to re-populate the Earth(without inserting Human DNA). They will not be able to restore humanity by concieving children on earth without some sort of genetic alteration to prepare there genes for life on earth again. Ok. So let’s just store pre-martian DNA in cryo freezers and use in vitro fertilization, once we face apocalyptic circumstance. That would be a great solution, however we do not need to create an entire colony to do this, and in fact, it would save much money, tragedy, and time to simply send a freezer full of DNA and robots to return to earth should catacylsm occur.

Godless Terrain

For all we know, god only protects the Earth. Is it wise to begin preparations to send millions of humans to another world that no one has ever set foot on? Should we not go there first and scope things out, before we send thousands of spaceships to prepare a massive permanent colony? It could be haunted. It could be full of spiritual demons that manifest in humans. We don’t know if this is a spot where humans can be human, spiritually or mentally.
